SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has worked tirelessly to green up the town and upkeep its facilities to bring about a better quality of life, council deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng said.

He, however, said they could not do much if littering and indiscriminate dumping remained a habit
here.

He was reacting to a statement by Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong that garbage was strewn around the refuse bin centre in Rajang Park.

“We regularly clean up the place but if some people choose to dump their refuse indiscriminately, there is nothing much that we can do.

“It all boils down to our attitude. All of us have a shared responsibility to keep our town spick and span,” Ngieng said yesterday, adding that the council had rolled out many cleanliness awareness
programmes.

Asked on the assemblyman’s claim that the facilities at the recreational park at Rajang Park is now in a dilapidated condition, Ngieng said they carried out regular maintenance of the place.

Yap further claimed that the mini overhead bridge at the park was in a run down condition with a plank
missing.

To this, Ngieng said: “We have carried out regular maintenance but there is always the factor of wear and tear as well as vandalism.”

In fact, he said the council received regular feedback or simple requests from joggers whenever they stumbled upon something.

“We do have people telling us small things like the lighting is not working and so, we get our men to carry out the simple repairs.”

On the missing plank, he said it would be fixed.
