KUCHING: Two men were detained by police late Friday after they and another accomplice were suspected to have broken into a car belonging to a female university student earlier the same day.

The duo, aged 30 and 35, were spotted by Central Police Station personnel inside a white Perodua Viva at a nearby polyclinic compound around 11.30pm following a police report lodged by the 21-year-old victim.

According to sources, police recognised the vehicle based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained from a shopping complex at Jalan P. Ramlee where the 6.45pm incident occurred.

The victim and her friends had earlier bought food at the shopping complex in preparation of breaking fast when they discovered the rear window of their car had been smashed and two laptops inside were missing.

However, a search by police failed to recover the stolen laptops, although a bag containing suspected stolen items was found inside the Viva.

Police have already identified the accomplice, who was said to have been the actual person who broke into the car, and are in the process of tracking him down.

The apprehended duo, both of Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, are currently being held in lockup pending further investigation.
