LABUAN: A shop owner was given a fake RM50 note by a woman who came to buy a packet of cigarette from his shop in town yesterday.

The victim, who declined to be identified, said the woman came to buy a packet of cigarettes costing RM6.50, and paid for it using the fake note.

“The incident occurred after 3pm when my sister was the cashier and I was in my office during that time.

“My sister felt something not right with the note after the woman had left. She compared the note with another RM50 note and was shocked to find its size smaller and its colour slightly off.

“I immediately went out from our shop to look for the woman, but she had already left,” he said, adding that he had yet to lodge a police report regarding the matter.

When contacted yesterday, Labuan police chief Superintendent Saiman Kasran advised those who encountered such an experience to lodge a police report immediately to help the police carry out their investigation.

Saiman said no such case had been reported to the police, while advising the public, especially shopkeepers to be more careful when receiving cash payment, especially involving high value notes such as RM50.
