MALACCA: State police have set up a special team to trace the suspect who bombed the automated teller machine (ATM) at the Bandar Baru Utama Masjid Tanah branch of Bank Rakyat here early yesterday morning.

Malacca police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the bank’s closed circuit television showed a man with a full-faced helmet and a blue jacket placing something on one of the ATM.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had placed what was believed to be a homemade bomb, which exploded at 3.34 am, he said.

“The suspect, however, failed to obtain any money from the machine and fled the scene,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Malacca police headquarters here today.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the Alor Gajah police headquarters at 06-5562222 or investigating officer Supt Shahrul Lalli Masduki at 012-2943322, he added.

Meanwhile, the affected branch’s corporate communications manager, Norliza Mat Isa, said only the ground floor was closed and operations were moved to the first floor of its premises. — Bernama
