MIRI: Miri City Night Market will be lit with light-emitting diode (LED) under a pilot solar project in Sarawak.

Miri mayor Lawrence Lai said the initiative taken by Miri City Council (MCC) was meant to promote green technology like solar power.

“The LED lights are not only environment-friendly but cheaper particularly for stall operators at the night market,” he said yesterday.

The agreed to the proposal to use LED solar energy for the night market after reviewing the pros like less pollution.

“If the stall operators use generators for electricity, they will emit loud noise and smoke. The took the initiative to promote LED solar lighting for Miri City Night Market which starts operation this Thursday (Aug 30),” Lai said.

LED solar lighting will be convenient and cheap for stall operators renting each bulb for only RM1 per night.

Council has appointed Sunway Enterprise to provide LED solar lighting for Miri City Night Market.

“If the pilot project goes well, the use of LED solar lights will be extended to other night markets including Saberkas night market,” he added.

He revealed that, Sibu was also interested to take the same initiative for their night market.

Meanwhile, 165 lots have been approved for operation to revive Miri City Night Market along Jalan Brooke and Jalan Raja from 6pm to 11pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The night market is held in collaboration with Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dayak Chamber of Commerce, Miri Sarawak Bumiputera Traders Association and Miri United Hawkers Association.
