KUCHING: In line with its advocacy for the development and enhancement of skills in the state, UCSI Extension Sdn Bhd signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Cereal Tech School of Baking Technology Singapore (CTSBT) to provide training in baking technology in Sarawak here yesterday.

The joint collaboration will see the introduction of the Certificate in Baking Technology (CBT), a part time two-month programme catered for individuals in the hospitality industry, particularly those in pastry and baking as well as those keen to learn new skills.

According to UCSI Extension director Gracie Geikie, the programme is also suitable for budding entrepreneurs who are looking to learn and equip themselves with the extra skill.

“Classes will be held on weekends, thus enabling working adults to take up CBT, which is an internationally recognised certification and the first of its kind available here,” she said, adding that the first intake will be on Oct 5.

Currently available on a part time basis, Gracie noted that UCSI Extension, a subsidiary of UCSI Group, is looking to provide the programme on a full-time basis next year.

Meanwhile, CTSBT director/principal Mike Fleming pointed out that CTSBT provides science based bakery training, offering diploma and certificate programmes whose focus is on ingredient function, technology, process, processing parameters and technology designed to product-thinking bakers who can apply the knowledge in an operational setting.

“For instance, students will learn about the technology of ingredients coupled with the process that creates the products and how ingredients interact to give consistence,” he said.

Students taking up the CBT, which comprises of modules such as Bread Making Technology 1, Short Pastry Technology and Cake Making Technology 1, will undergo training at the Bing Coffee Kitchen.

“Each class will consist of a maximum of 15 students who learn from our trainers from Singapore,” Fleming said, and added that CBT is also recognised by the Council for Private Education in Singapore.

The programme is priced at RM4,500 with a registration fee of RM200. Early bird rate of 10 per cent discount is available for registration until tomorrow (Aug 31). Flexi payment is also available.
