SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council would take legal action against the owners of seven unauthorised structures for failing to comply with the council’s final demolition notices.

Its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the structures involved three shop houses and two residential houses.

“SMC has made it clear that prior approval must be obtained before the actual renovation to extend existing buildings.

“This month, the council has arranged for two demolitions of unauthorised structures, a car washing shed and an external staircase, sited in a public place,” he said when chairing the council’s monthly meeting on Wednesday.

According to Tiong, the car washing shed had been removed by its owner before the council proceeded with action.

As for the staircase, he said the owner had been given a one-month grace period to demolish it.

“There are new cases identified and have been served with the stop work orders and demolition notices this month.

“The council has warned the owners to cease renovation works immediately or SMC would take legal action against them,” he said.

On another matter, Tiong said the 54 surveillance cameras (CCTVs) in operation for almost a year, had helped in reducing the crime rate especially in the town’s central business district area.

“The CCTVs are funded by the council under Sibu City Surveillance System,” he said.

On Sibu Night Market, he said most hawkers and customers were happy with the new trading site at Butterfly Garden.

He said a dialogue with barbeque stall owners to resolve public complaints on excessive smoke and oil spillage would be held next week.
