SIBU: Following the success of the first Borneo Talent Award (BTA) last year, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will be holding its second edition at Sibu Civic Centre beginning Nov 22.

The event is open to all Malaysians.

Entries are now open and the registration forms can be downloaded from www.smc.gov.my or obtained at the council’s office.

SMC deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng told a press conference yesterday that entries must be submitted to the council’s office, or faxed to 084-320240 or emailed to [email protected] or [email protected] by
Nov 9.

“Last year’s BTA attracted about 150 participants throughout the state. Hopefully, we can have more participants this year,” he enthused.

Contestants from outside Sibu will have to bear their own travelling and accommodation expenses.

The preliminary rounds will be on Nov 22 and 23 at 6.30pm, the semi-final on Nov 24 at 6.30pm and the final on Nov 25 at 7pm.

Each person is limited to one event, which can be singing, dancing, musical instrument recital, magic show, mimic show, cross talk, pantomime, acrobatics and so on.

Each performance is to last three to five minutes.

“The judging criteria include creativity, artistic skills, presentation, choreography, and uniqueness,” Ngieng said.

There are five awards; namely Talent of the Year (main award), The Most Popular Talent Award, The Most Creative Talent Award, The Most Entertaining Talent Award and the Special Talent Award.

The winner of the main award will take home the BTA Award Trophy and RM5,000 cash prize.

Winners of the Most Popular, Most Creative and The Most Entertaining Talent Award will each walk away with a trophy and RM1,000.

“The final judging for the Most Popular Talent Award shall include audience voting, which constitutes 30 per cent of the total marks,” he said.

Meanwhile, five winners for the Special Talent Award will each walk away with a trophy and RM500.

Call the council at 084-333411 ext 265 (for Lau Siew Yen) or ext 295 (for Razif Rosli) for details.

Enquiries may also be done by SMS to 016-8668828.

According to event organising chairperson Wong Hie Ping, BTA is a great platform for people with different talents to exhibit their talents.

“I believe there are many talents out there that need to be discovered. I was told that last year’s participants, including those who did not win prizes, are regularly invited by government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to perform at their functions,” she said.

She also said the event is a good platform to showcase the 1Malaysia spirit.

The press conference was also attended by SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, its Cultural, Arts, Sports and Tourism standing committee chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai and organising committee members Edmund Wong and Raymond Nyian.
