Dawos: Dearth of signboards a problem for tourists

SERIAN: Recently, several foreign tourists who had wanted to see Orang Utans in Semenggok ended up in Serian.

Kampung Panchor Dayak boasts a hot spring which is said to have healing properties for a myriad of sickness, but tourists and locals might not be able to find this place.

The reason is because the state still lacked proper signboards to guide tourists to many places of interest.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit, who made this remark yesterday, said his ministry would give allocations to Kuching North City North Commission (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to enable them to erect proper and attractive signboards to guide visitors to tourist spots in Kuching and Samarahan.

“We have many good tourist attractions, but without proper signboards it will be very difficult for tourists to enjoy them,” Mambong MP Dawos said at the launching of Panchor Dayak Hotspring improvement project at KM45 along the Kuching-Serian Road.

Some RM450,000 was spent on the project which started in December last year and completed in May. Dawos said he had urged the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Kampung Panchor Dayak to erect signboards to the hot spring.

On a related matter, he said three tourism project proposals had been submitted under the 3rd rolling of the 10th Malaysia Plan for implementation in Mambong parliamentary constituency.

Among them is a project at Temurang which boasts Rafflesia flowers.

For this project, a sum of RM1.9 million had been requested.

However, Dawos could not recall details of the other two projects, but added that the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) was still scrutinising the proposals. Touching on a road project in Mongkos which has a homestay programme, Dawos said an allocation of RM1.2 million had been approved.
