TEMERLOH: Only loan borrowers who are summoned by the court and served with a Letter of Demand (LOD) will be blacklisted by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

PTPTN chairman Datuk Ismail Mohamad Said said under Section 22A of the PTPTN Act 1987 or Act 556, blacklisted defaulters could be banned from leaving the country.

He said PTPTN loan borrowers would only be blacklisted if they continued to ignore countless warnings.

Ismail, who is also MP for Kuala Krau, said from August 2008 until July 2012, PTPTN had blacklisted and prohibited 132,801 defaulters from leaving the country through the Immigration Department.

However, 28,319 of them paid back their loans amounting to RM194.60 million, he told reporters at a Hari Raya open house he hosted jointly with Kerdau assemblyman Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad in Padang Kampung Pulau Pasir Mandi here yesterday. — Bernama
