MIRI: The national oil and gas company, Petronas, will invest more than RM10 billion to build another LNG processing module at the Petronas LNG complex in Bintulu.

The project, known as Train 9, will be able to produce an additional 3.6 million metric tonnes of LNG per annum.

“We are also aggressively pursuing the Floating LNG Project (FLNG1) offshore Sarawak,” said head of operation of Petronas Carigali Sarawak, Mohd Nazori Janor.

Speaking at a media engagement programme here on Tuesday Nazori said that Petronas’ presence in Miri specifically and in the country as whole had grown rapidly in the last decade.

“The company will grow even more rapidly in the coming years with the development of the RM60 billion-refinery and petrochemical integrated development in Johor.

“Petronas will also be spending about RM300 billion over five years (2012 – 2017) on enhanced oil recovery as well as brown, small and marginal field development in Malaysia to sustain production level and increase resource base as well as generating jobs and business opportunities in oil and gas sector,” Nazori said.

Petronas contributes about 40 per cent to the national coffer, which is made up of taxes and fixed dividend payment of RM30 billion a year.

Petronas is also paying high gas subsidy to help fuel industrial growth in the country.

“This year, Petronas is expected to bear some RM28 billion in subsidy up from last year’s figure of RM23.7 billion.

“Petronas is also a responsible corporate citizen in Malaysia and in countries where it operates. It spends millions of ringgit every year to implement thousands of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes in countries where it operates,” he said, adding that it also contributed significantly to human capital development by awarding scholarships to deserving students to pursue their secondary and tertiary educations locally and overseas.

Nazori thanked the media for their support in giving them the media coverage of their activities such as the CSR programmes and the Tukau oil platform fire incident in June.

This was the second Petronas-NSJA engagement, which started with a media workshop on Monday, followed by a friendly bowling match.

Earlier, they planted trees at Miri Hospital here.
