KLUANG: The people have been urged to reject the deviant culture perpetrated by the opposition as it runs contrary to the norms of the Malaysian life, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The deputy prime minister said if the culture was accepted, it would destroy what had been achieved by the country and the people.
“We need to oppose these quarters who perpetrated the deviant culture as it is not appropriate to our practices.”
“This offensive culture will destroy the country,” he said when addressing over 20,000 people at a Hari Raya open house hosted by Johor Wanita Umno and non-governmental organisations in Kampung Melayu here yesterday.
Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, urged the people to be wary of the opposition antics of late where their leaders were going around the country by buses.
The deputy prime minister said the Barisan Nasional-led government had succeeded in bringing progress to the people with the per capita income rising to USD$9,700 (USD1=RM3.03) — a very high achievement for a developing country.
“Apart from that, we managed to reduce poverty from 70 per cent when we first gained independence to only three per cent at the moment,” he said, adding that government had also set up institutions aimed at building nationhood.
He said the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) was instrumental in bringing progress and
development to a higher level, and ensuring the people of various races getting more basic amenities as well as higher income.
Muhyiddin said what were being done by the BN were different from the opposition who merely promised the moon and the stars to the people, but failed to fulfilled them.
He said the opposition had also stated that a manifesto was not a promise, and hence, they was no need to honour them.
“If that is how they feel about it, why bother propagate the content of the Orange Book,” said Muhyiddin while asking people not to be hoodwinked by the opposition’s promises.
Meanwhile, he also urged Wanita Umno and Wanita BN members to continue to get closer to the people through their programmes and activities in an effort to solve the problems faced by the people.
“Now is not the time to sit back and be complacent. Instead, all activities aimed at getting closer to the people should be stepped up to ensure that BN return to power in the next general election,” he added.
