4 students, a staff win Curtin Sarawak Photo Contest

MIRI: Four amateur student photographers and a staff member of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) won top prizes in the university’s Curtin Sarawak Photo Contest 2012.

The contest organised by Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications Department for the second year and opened to all students and staff of the university, saw nearly 300 photographs taking part.

The photographs featured staff and students, as well as sceneries, facilities and campus life on the Curtin Sarawak campus and attractions in Miri.

Aimed at promoting Curtin Sarawak as a prime choice and having a conducive environment for tertiary studies in the thriving city of Miri, the contest featured five categories: Portraiture, Situations, Landscapes, Still Life and Buildings and Facilities.

“Congratulations to the winners for their excellent work, and thanks to all our students and staff who participated in the contest,” said deputy pro vice-chancellor Professor Alistair Inglis who presented the prizes to winners recently.

“These new photos will certainly bring a refreshing new look and add a whole new dimension to our promotional material and publications,” he added.

Shortlisted photographs were judged based on their technical merit, composition and impact.

The university’s School of Engineering and Science chemical engineering student William Yong walked away with the grand prize comprising a ShaShinKi gift voucher worth RM400.

The second and third prizes went to mass communication student Mohd Budriz Abdul Aziz from the School of Business, and Application Development officer Tay Miaw Lang of the university’s Information and Communication Technology Department, respectively.

Mohd Budriz won a RM300 ShaShinKi gift voucher while Tay received a RM200 voucher, courtesy of Shashinki.com which is one of the largest online camera shops in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the People’s Choice Award was won by Liew Jia Yang, a civil and construction engineering student of the School of Engineering and Science.

Her entry received the highest number of votes on Curtin Sarawak’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CurtinUniversitySarawak Malaysia.

Among those present at the prize giving ceremony was Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications manager Nicholas Leong.

The contestants are likely to see their photographs being featured in the university’s advertising, publications and online promotion for some years to come.
