MP regrets misleading report on his bankruptcy status

LABUAN: Member of Parliament for Labuan Datuk Yussof Mahal has expressed regret over a misleading report in a local English newspaper on Sept 21 which quoted him as having declared himself to be no longer a bankrupt.

He said the report could put him in a difficult situation as it is tantamount to having disobeyed the authorities’ decision or judgement.

“The report had misled the people at large. It is without a clarification from me. The reporter who ran the story was not at the function and was only briefed by his colleague, when I delivered a speech to explain to those who attended an event. I would like to stress here that the case is still pending and my lawyer is doing his best as he could to resolve the case according to the law,” he said in a statement issued here yesterday.

The correction on the front page of the newspaper (published 22 Sept) reported him as having “denied” was also not right, as he had never declared himself no longer a bankrupt,

“How can I deny when I never said so as reported by the newspaper?. What I said in my speech was the case is still being resolved and we hope for a positive solution.”
