KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of the National Key Result Area (NKRA) on crime reduction next year will focus on managing public perception on their safety, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said while the first phase of the NKRA focused on reducing crime index and targeting specific crimes, the second phase would emphasise on creating a safe environment and correcting public perception on their safety.

“It will deal with perception, feeling and reality. We hope that with this change, we can ally public worries on their safety.

“We will announce and talk about the second phase of the NKRA on crime reduction soon,” he told reporters after closing a meeting of top brass police officers at the Royal Malaysia Police College here yesterday.

On the 2013 Budget, he said the allocation would be capitalised to strengthen the presence of policemen to give an impression to the public that the police were committed in fighting crime.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said an allocation in the 2013 Budget for setting up of a motorcycle patrolling unit to monitor housing areas was another measure to reduce street crimes.

“A total of 1,000 motorcycles, which will be purchased for the unit, will be mobilised primarily to patrol hot spots, particularly in the Klang Valley.

“Members of the patrol unit will go on their rounds in pairs. Their presence will not only help deter crimes but also create a positive perception in the community,” he said. — Bernama
