GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state Education Department has instructed the North Seberang Perai District Education Office to investigate claims by a group of parents that their children were caned for minor mistakes at school.

The department’s director Ahmad Tarmizi Kamaruddin said that a special panel has been formed to investigate the matter by interviewing the pupils, teachers and school authority involved.

“I have instructed the District Education Office to investigate the matter and involve all the relevant parties, to be fair to all,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday.

The investigation was expected to take at least a week, he added.

“Follow up will be based on the investigation and if the parents’ claims are true, we will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against the teacher concerned,” he said.

A group of concerned parents on Tuesday lodged a report at the Sungai Dua police station here claiming their children were caned by a teacher for minor mistakes.

They also claimed that the woman teacher, in her 40s, had caned their children on the palm or buttocks causing bruises. — Bernama
