KUCHING: A total of 164 pupils of St Mary’s Primary School showcased their talents during a mini concert on Wednesday with performances ranging from mini orchestra, dancing, choir, sape and recorder ensemble.

Themed ‘A Night of Talents’, the concert was also meant to commemorate the establishment of St Mary’s School 164 years ago.

Jointly organised by the school and parent-teacher association (PTA), the concert also saw the school’s teachers perform a traditional Malay dance.

Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing praised the organisers for instilling the spirit of unity among students.

In his speech read by Assistant Minister of Culture and Heritage Liwan Lagang, Masing said the concert would help to create better understanding on Malaysia’s culture and arts among the younger generation.

“It is the first time the school has organised such an event which is beyond talent and interest. I believe the concept is learning through entertainment to uncover the potential and appreciate our culture.”

Masing said such events are essential for students to achieve a balance between the academic and co-curricular.

He also announced an RM5,000 grant for the school.

Meanwhile, PTA chairman Dr Ismail Abdullah said the school’s first talent night received an overwhelming response.

“No primary school in Sarawak has ever organised such an event,” he said.

He called on more parents to join the PTA to strengthen the association so that more activities could be held for the benefit of the school and pupils.
