BETONG: The football team of SK Nanga Ajau made their school proud by winning the Betong Regional Training Centre football competition held at SK Paku Central field recently.

In the final, SK Nanga Ajau thrashed SK Spinang 4-0 to clinch the title. In the preliminary stages, the team defeated SK Spinang 2-0 and drew 2-2 with tournament favourites and host SK Paku Central.

“This is one the activities that we organise here annually. It was organised for the sake of football development in Betong division,” said tournament spokesman Sujie Begat.

For the record, there are five Regional Football Training Centres (primary school) for football in Betong division. These centres are located at SK Nanga Ajau, SK Paku Central, SK Spinang, SK Sg Pasir and SK St Peter.

All these training centres are conducted by teachers who are also coaches. These coaches are under the supervision of the Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP) and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS).

SK Nanga Ajau headmaster Peter George Labut congratulated the students, teachers and trainer Roberto Maxwell for their hard work that resulted on their latest success. With more programmes and tournaments like these, he hopes that Betong being one of the youngest divisions in Sarawak will one day contribute to produce national-class players for the country.

“Although as a school, we should emphasise on academics, we also hope that our students excel in sports. This is one of the steps taken by us to ensure that Betong continues to excel in all areas in youth development,” he added.
