BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: GDG Brunei Darussalam, a group of developers who have an interest in Google’s developer technologies, announced an upcoming festival – the GDG DevFest Brunei 2012 – yesterday, Borneo Bulletin reported.

Members of Brunei’s GDG held a press conference at the iCentre announcing the event, which is set to take place on October 29 to 30, in collaboration with DST Communication Brunei.

Inspired by and uniquely, tailored to the needs of Brunei developers, the event will be powered by a shared belief that when developers come together to exchange ideas, amazing innovations can happen, said the organisation.

Speaking on what is to come, the GDG members highlighted that there will be a keynote speech on content and developer strategies for social, local and mobile technology, most probably from a representative of Google.

It was also mentioned that the event will feature enterprise mapping, a showcase of the Google App Engine, a HTML & Web Academy, Android Development as well as a local developers’ showcase session.

The GDG DevFest Brunei 2012 will be a large community-run event that will offer speaker sessions across product areas, codelabs and an all-day hack-a-thon – an activity that will see people asked to develop an application within a time limit.

In terms of the audience they hope to attract students, business professionals and developers.

Responding to a question, Pg Sarimah Pg Hj Abd Latiff, CEO of Infocomm Federation Brunei, who is also a member of the GDG Group, explained that the GDG DevFest will allow the organisation to identify and build a more comprehensive database of local Android developers here in Brunei.

“This is a good time for all developers to be registered,” she said. “It is also a good time for all of us to come together and integrate in terms of development skills and experiences.”

She added that this platform would allow prospective developers to see and learn things of a global standard.

It was also mentioned during the press conference that should there be developers who display a lot of potential during the event, then there is a possibility that they could be sent abroad on an exchange with other GDG developers from other countries.
