New Overhead Bridge Opens In Sengkurong

SENGKURONG: Sengkurong Primary School students and residents living nearby can now feel at ease when crossing the usually busy four-lane Sengkurong road after Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman, the Minister of Development, officially opened a new overhead pedestrian bridge, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The completion of the overhead pedestrian bridge came as a relief for the schoolchildren and their parents, as well as nearby residents of nearby areas.

Hj Abdullah Hanif, the Village Head of Sengkurong A said, “The new overhead pedestrian bridge will help a lot of people cross the road, especially the children from Sengkurong Primary School. We have waited quite a while for this bridge and now it’s completed.”

He expressed, “We want to thank the Government of His Majesty and the authorities for constructing the bridge. Previously, it was quite dangerous for schoolchildren and their parents to cross the four-lane road when there was heavy traffic. With the overhead bridge, the schoolchildren can cross the road safely.”

The bridge is one of the projects under the a nationwide project conducted by the Department of Roads, Public Works Department. The project was undertaken as a continuation of the plan to build pedestrian bridges in the country, especially in areas near government schools that are located near to major roads.

The Sengkurong overhead pedestrian bridge is part of the three overhead bridges currently implemented under one contract.

Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi in an interview said, “This is one of the overhead bridge projects that are currently being implemented to provide safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren to cross the road.”
In addition to the overhead bridge projects, the minister revealed that the ministry is also implementing other projects like interchanges in a few locations, namely, Jln Babu Raja, Jln Telanai and Bukit Beruang while research is being done for Kg Sengkarai of Tutong and other areas.

The overhead pedestrian bridge is one of the three bridges costing a total of B$1.07 million. The other two bridges will be at Jerudong Road and the Pasar Ulak Radial Road. All the three projects are under one contract awarded to JYC Sdn Bhd and all the three overhead bridges are scheduled to be completed by August 2013.

Also at the ceremony yesterday were senior officials from the Ministry of Development, as well as a group of children from Sengkurong Primary School who got to try out the new overhead pedestrian bridge.
