Wrong to politicise AES initiative — Wan Junaidi

KUCHING: Implementation of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) camera in the state should not be politicised as it is meant to reduce accidents and change the bad habits of road users.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said its implementation at accident hotspots was one of the best ways to reduce the number of road accidents.

“It has to be done because we have thousands of fatal accidents annually, and it cost millions of ringgit to the country in terms of loss of human resources and the destruction of property,” said Wan Junaidi after officiating at the Muay Thai Charity Challenge here yesterday.

He said controversy surrounding the system was fanned by people who loved to break the law or craved political mileage.

“As far as I know, there is no need to complain,” said Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP.

He opined that if the bad behaviours of drivers remained even after the AES system was in place, enacting stricter laws would become inevitable.

Wan Junaidi said such a camera system was common in Europe and China, and it had shown to be effective in helping to reduce road accidents

“We have to train our drivers to be responsible as the root cause of accidents is the behavior of the drivers themselves.”

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently revealed the location of AES cameras in 831 areas nationwide.
