TAWAU: The role of women in developing the country is increasingly appreciated by the leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Tanjung Batu assemblywoman Datuk Hamisa Samat, who pointed this out, said previously women’s roles were often belittled but since Malaysia gained its 55 years of independence and 49 years for Sabah, it is far different now if viewed from the country’s development achievements today.

She said that women in Malaysia had achieved excellence in various fields, including economy, politics and academic.

“The excellence achieved by women is made possible by the freedom and encouragement given by the government that recognizes the contribution of women to national development,” she said at the Kalabakan Umno Wanita Salam Sayang Program at Kampung Tanjung Batu Keramat yesterday.

Hamisa who is also Kalabakan Wanita Umno chief, said Musa had announced a budget allocation of RM147.99 million to the Community Development and Consumer Affairs Ministry, including RM10.96 million to implement women’s development and leadership programs as well as enhancing the health and socio-economic development of women.

“This showed that women’s role is appreciated,” she added.
