SEMPORNA: The peace agreement signed by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippines government on October 15 would be beneficial to the country, especially Sabah, said Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie.

With the signing of the peace agreement, he said it would greatly enhance economic growth and indirectly also benefit Malaysia.

“This union not only brings benefits to development of Muslims, but also to humanity.

“Indirectly, it also will create economic growth for both countries,” he said after the Aidiladha prayers and handing over of sacrificial cow at the Semporna district mosque yesterday.

Shafie said other Muslim countries in conflict could also look to the peace agreement as a catalyst for achieving peace and unity.

“We pray that this agreement will be able to achieve its goal towards creating a peaceful region,” he said.

The agreement which was signed on Oct 15, at the Malacanang Palace in Manila, was witnessed by the Philippines president Banigno Aguino III and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Meanwhile, Shafie advised Muslims in the country to be united in order to reinforce the teaching of Islam in national development.

He also urged Muslims to embrace the true meaning of the ‘Hari Raya Korban’ that has many lessons for them.

He said the sacrifice could shape the ideal Islamic teaching such as encouraging them to work hard.
