‘Don’t simply accuse council, contractors’

MIRI: Residents should not simply point their fingers at Miri City Council (MCC) and its contractors if their neighbourhoods are smelly and dirty.

Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said it would serve no purpose even though the city council, through its contractors, collected rubbish regularly.

“The root of the problem could be indiscriminate throwing of rubbish into bulk bins placed by the council,” he said at the handing over of wheel bins to members of Tudan Resident Committee at Tudan Desaras  here yesterday.

“They (residents) seem to be playing basketball when throwing their rubbish into bins. They threw directly from their cars or motorcycles without making sure that it (rubbish) really went in.”

Lee cautioned that those waste which lay outside the bins was not only an eyesore but also a health hazard.

“If there were no co-operation from the residents themselves, there will be no end to this sort of problem.”

Meanwhile, Lee also urged city council to put more bins in big housing areas, including villages, for the convenience of the people.

Present at the event were Tudan Resident Committee chairman Lawrence Kong and philanthropist Hii King Chiong, who also donated bins to the Area Resident Committee.
