KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Hawkers and Petty Traders Association (PKBS) will be putting forward a proposal and memorandum to the National Convention of Hawkers and Petty Traders which will be held on Nov 18 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

The  delegates will be leaving on Nov 18, said PKBS representative Kani-Isa Marican Sh. Ismail in a press statement made available yesterday.

In the statement, it was also mentioned that the association  lauded the action taken by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) against illegal traders within its jurisdiction.

Describing DBKU’s action as ‘walking the talk’, the association however said the local authority should have been looking for alternative solution rather than  confiscating goods of errant hawkers and traders.

They pointed out that a few of the traders were not happy with a recent incident where DBKU officers confiscated goods of traders at SK Gita and SMK Petra Jaya.

Those who were operating without a licence had also claimed that they were deprived of their livelihood.

The association said they hoped for more privileges including financial assistance to be provided by the government.

As such, the association felt that they needed to come up with the proposal and memorandum.

On Oct 23, three food vendors and a durian seller had their items confiscated in a raid by DBKU in front of the two schools (SK Gita and SMK Petra Jaya) as the council resumed operation to stamp out illegal roadside traders.

The operation started in September.

DBKU is taking strict enforcement measures against illegal traders in public places, road curbs, roadside, roundabouts, parking lots and five-foot ways among other places.

Apart from the raid, four such operations had taken place thus far in areas of Jalan Gersik, Jalan Stadium and the city centre recently.
