PACKED CROWD: Members of the public queue impatiently as they await for the disbursement of vouchers from Parkson during its opening at Plaza Merdeka yesterday.

KUCHING: Despite careful planning and a spacious layout, the launch of Plaza Merdeka drew a shopping frenzy yesterday at its soft launching caused by avid shoppers hoping to score high-value vouchers.

The opening of Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd’s (Parkson) outlet in Plaza Merdeka encouraged members of the public to wait in queue to grab the departmental store’s Early Bird Specials consisting of free Parkson vouchers for 230 customers.

Customers were entitled to a RM500 voucher each for the first 10 customers, RM100 for the subsequent 20 customers and RM50 vouchers for the next 200 customers after that.

However, the crowd went from push to shove as members of the public nearly came to a stampede in a race to grab the vouchers.

Parkson had to postpone the disbursement of these vouchers within hours of its opening due to safety issues.
