Rela eyes 5,000 recruits by 2013

LIMBANG: Limbang District Rela (Volunteer Corps) is targeting 5,000 recruits by 2013 to help security organisations keep peace and security.

District Officer Lt Colonel Mat Usin Bakar said this was an achievable target as there are already 4,971 registered members including 1,541 female volunteers in Limbang District.

He attributed it to greater public awareness of the corps through active promotion and Rela Limbang which has contributed towards a safer and peaceful Limbang.

“Apart from assisting in security matter, our members were also involved in charitable and community welfare programmes with other government departments and agencies in town and rural areas,” he said.

Mat Usin looked forward to raising the bar on discipline among members and relations officers and platoon leaders to serve with distinction in accordance with instructions. He welcomed the government’s move in re-branding Rela, saying it should be accepted by all members.

“We believe the re-branding will energise Rela members to serve as the eyes and ears of the government and assist police in maintaining peace and order,” he said.
