KUCHING: Men must take the initiative to attend parenting workshops to enhance parenting skills, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng yesterday.

Speaking at the Parenting Skills’ Workshop organised by Community Development Department (Kemas) at the auditorium of Bangunan Sultan Iskandar at Jalan Simpang Tiga here, he expressed disappointment that the workshop attracted only a few fathers.

“Programmes on parenting skills are not only for mothers, but for both parents. Fathers, as the main decision maker of a family, must get to know their role in looking after and educating their children,” said Yong, who is also Stampin MP.

He stressed there would be peace and harmony in the family if both parents have good parenting skills.

“Unity in families is important as a country is formed by families. A country with a strong family institution will progress and prosper.”

Yong hoped Kemas and other relevant bodies encourage more men to take part in parenting activities.

Acknowledging the role of Kemas in strengthening community development especially in rural areas, he suggested the department be more proactive in encouraging urbanites to visit their families more frequently.

“With urbanisation and modernisation, many people have migrated to towns and formed their families outside their home towns. In such a situation, you must regularly visit your family in your hometown.”

Yong advised parents to instill good values in their children to set them on the right path.

Also present were State Kemas director Abang Rabaee Abang Muhi and SUPP Batu Lintang chairman Sih Hua Tong.
