KLANG: Construction of Klang’s third bridge to ease traffic congestion into the town would begin early next year.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the state government had directed the Public Works Department and Klang Municipal Council to make the relevant preparations including calling for the project tender.

“If the tender could be awarded by next February, the project could start after two months,” he told reporters after visiting the project site at the Sungai Bertih canal, here today.

He said the two-kilometre project was expected to be completed within two years. Recently, Abdul Khalid said at the state assembly that the state government proposed to utilise RM300 million of its RM2.57 billion reserves for the third bridge.

He said the third bridge would be built across the Sungai Pinang and Klang Straits to divert vehicles from Kuala Langat and Port Klang from entering the town.

According to him, more than 200,000 vehicles were using the existing bridges, which contributed to the bottleneck.

On why the state government did not build the bridge earlier, he said the state’s reserves in 2009 then were not sufficient for development projects. – Bernama
