KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 692 children with heart-related diseases have received aid to undergo surgery between 2006 and November last year, under the National Heart Institute Foundation Patient Assistance Programme (YIJN).

YIJN manager Ritzzawati Rosli Mohd Rosli said, the aid was obtained through contributions from numerous parties, including non-governmental organisations and individuals.

She said, as of last November, 163 children were given assistance, via RM4 million in contributions, under the programme.

“Every year, the foundation spends an average of RM2 million to finance the cost of treatment for poor patients, with each surgery costing RM35,000, depending on the patient’s condition,” she said when met at the launch of a music album, ‘Gustav and Hannes’ here yesterday.

The album launch was the effort of a couple, Christian Schwanz and Haanim Bamadhaj, to help the foundation collect funds, and in memory of one of their twin children, three-week-old Gustav, who succumbed to heart problem in 2011.
