SIBU: Sibu Division Chen Clan (Ling Chuan) Association yesterday stood up for slain carpenter Ting Ing Pang, 61, by urging Mukah police to hasten their investigation and to ensure that justice is done.

Ing Pang was killed after folk from two longhouses launched a mass attack on him following a road accident at Mile 64 Sibu–Balingian Road last Thursday.

In a press conference yesterday, the association’s honorary chairman Penghulu Ting Teck Kai said their clan had prayed that the alleged murderers be arrested and tried to ensure justice was done for Ing Pang and his family.

He said his association was disappointed that they had not seen positive light from the police probe.

“We do not want to see the killing just end in this manner quietly. Our association is speaking up now. We want justice.”

The surname ‘Chen’ comes from the Chinese Hanyu translation. In Foochow, the surname is pronounced as “Ting”, in Cantonese ‘Chan’ and in Hokkien ‘Tan’.

Teck Kai said after the accident that involved the collision of Ing Pang’s car and a motorcyclist at 7am, Ing Pang had not escaped from his responsibility.

“He called Selangau Police to probe the accident.”

Teck Kai said they were told that as Ing Pang was waiting for the police to arrive, some members of the two longhouses launched their assault.

He said the beating only stopped when the policemen arrived.

“We are concerned the police are all quiet now. We will write to Mukah police chief DSP Omar Bakhtiar to enquire and send a carbon copy to Bukit Aman. We want to ensure justice for Ing Pang.”

Teck Kai said their clan members would not accept the violence that had erupted from the accident.

He said their clan also condemned those taking the law into their own hands.

He said it was best to leave road accidents to the police for a fair and just action.

“Road accidents tend to happen, but we must be rational. We should not be overtaken by our emotion.”

Teck Kai said police had the identities of the suspects and he hoped they would be arrested soon.

In the accident, Ing Pang from Sibu Jaya was returning from Bintulu with a foreign worker after a working trip.

They had left Bintulu at 5am and his car collided with a motorcyclist two hours later, and the victim happened to be a member of a longhouse community there.

The 38-year-old rider sustained head and facial injuries and a fractured right thigh. He fainted in the accident.

Following the attack on him, Ing Pang suffered head and facial injuries and a fractured left thigh.

His eyes were badly bruised and swollen and he slipped into a coma and died at Sibu Hospital at 11am.

Police said the foreign worker with Ting was now the prime witness.

Meanwhile, a family member of Ing Pang, who was present at the press conference, confirmed a post mortem on Ing Pang was conducted yesterday at 10am.

She said she had been told by the police in Mukah that they were still probing the case.

“I hope they will speed up the probe.”

The family member thanked members of the public for their moral support, help and concern.
