MIRI: Lucky anglers stand to win RM32,000 worth of cash prizes in the Miri City 7th International Deep Sea Fishing Competition to be held from May 9 to 12.

The annual international event is organised by Miri Anglers Club (MAC) Sarawak in conjunction with the Miri May Fest.

“Both local and international anglers will vie for the attractive cash prizes, and a total of 150 anglers are expected to register for the deep sea fishing competition this year,” said Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin after launching the event’s poster at Miri Airport yesterday.

Lee said 50 anglers from China, 20 from Peninsular Malaysia, 10 from Singapore and a few from other foreign countries including Brunei Darussalam and Iran would be among those participating in the event.

“Congratulations to MAC who had made the International Deep Sea Fishing (IDSF) competition event as one of the attractions and was listed in the Sarawak annual tourism calendar by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and State Ministry of Tourism,” he said of MAC, which he praised for being an exemplary non-governmental organisation in promoting Miri as a resort city to the world.

He revealed that this year MAC would charter another 12 fishing boats for the event, bringing the total to 22 boats to cater to the increasing number of participants.

The event will kick off at Marina Bay–South China Sea (Luconia Shoal) and entrance fee is at RM400 per person which excludes boat rental fee.

Early birds registering before April 30 will only pay RM350.

Closing date is May 7 at 5pm.

Lee said the tournament technique varies from popping, trolling, jigging, casting and bottom fishing.

The top 15 catches such as Groupers, Amberjacks, Dogtooth Tunas and Ruby Snappers will be displayed on May 12 at Marina Bay Wharf car park from 2pm to 3pm.
