MIRI: The Thaipusam celebration at the Kamini Durga Easwari Amman Shrine atop the Raghavan Building at Brooke Road here went smoothly on Sunday, thanks to the favourable weather.

Over 60 Hindus participated in the milk procession which was the highlight of the occasion organised by Miri Hindu Society (MHS).

MHS chairman Selvaraj Grapragasem said it was a successful event though celebrated on a moderate scale.

“It’s all because of good cooperation, understanding and strong support from one another that attributed to the success,” he acknowledged with enthusiasm.

On the festival, Selvaraj explained that Thaipusam is a day when Hindus pay homage to Lord Murugan.

The procession which started at 8.30am saw 30 devotees carrying pots of milk on their heads to do ‘abishegam’ to Lord Murugan.

They carried the pots from the ground floor to the upper floor of the Raghavan Building, after which they chanted a hymn in Tamil: “Vel vel … vetri vel.”

After that, the milk was placed on an altar as an offering to Lord Murugan, followed by the recital of ‘bhajans’ and special prayers.

‘Ananthaanam’ or food was served at 11am.

Selvaraj was happy with the support from Hindus here and thanked them and all who had helped in one way or another to make the event a success.

“Not forgetting our members and their families and the trainees from the National Service,” he added.
