KUCHING: The State Welfare Department yesterday presented cheques totalling RM3,355 to five victims of a storm which damaged their houses at Kampung Kudei Baru.

The storm, which occurred on Nov 23 at the village, damaged the roofs of the houses although there were no casualties in the 3pm incident.

State Welfare Department director Noriah Ahmad, who presented the cheques, urged for closer relation between community leaders and the Welfare Department as it could speed up delivery of assistance to those affected by such disaster in the future.

“Our department relies on information from those on the ground and I laud the close relation between both the community leaders here in Kampung Kudei and the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) for being the middlemen in channelling the information to us,” said Noriah.

Meanwhile, SUPP Batu Lintang branch chairman Sih Hua Tong pointed out that SUPP would continue to look at ways to assist the people, especially those who faced hardship and praised agencies such as the Welfare Department for being able to work closely with the party.

“This is the spirit that we are promoting where we are here to help those in need, regardless of their respective race or religion,” said Sih.

The Nov 23 incident had affected the house of Surina Tumbil where around 70 per cent of her house roof was damaged.

Other victims include Awangrini Jalang, Sangi Abu, Collin William and Ita Undi.
