SERIAN: Those who had yet to register or those names that were not included in the BR1M 2.0 distribution list should submit their applications now as the government had extended the registration period to March 15.

Serian MP Datuk Richard Riot said this was to allow more people to benefit from government’s financial aid.

“The government is very concerned about the people’s welfare, and as such our prime minister decided to extend the application period,” Riot said at the distribution of BR1M 2.0 vouchers at Serian Community Hall yesterday.

Riot said more than RM9.76 million would be distributed to 15,840 families and 8,143 singles who earned less than RM2,000 a month in Serian district.

Apart from BR1M, he told those present that the government also gave cash assistant amounting to RM831,000 to 3,583 needy in the district through the Community Welfare Department every month.

Riot, who is also Deputy Foreign Minister, added that if the country’s economy continued to be sound, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had promised to not only continue giving BR1M in future but also increased its amount.

He pointed out that the aid was not a political gimmick to fish for votes in the impending general election as alleged by the opposition.

“When the government gave out BR1M 1.0 last year, there were also similar claims that it was a political ploy to fish for votes. But then there was no election last year.

“The distribution of the aid assistant this time too has nothing to do with the impending election.”

Mambong MP Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit, Temenggong Chai Kow Soon, Serian District Officer Sinde Muling and Kedup Assemblyman Martin Ben were among those present.
