BAU: About 2,000 people are expected at a Chinese New Year gathering at the civic centre here tomorrow which will also see the presence of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

It’s a gathering basically meant for the Chinese community in Mas Gading and as such the organising chairman Datuk Peter Nansian hoped that it would not be politicised.

“It is normal for Barisan Nasional (BN) top leadership to share the joy of CNY with the Chinese community and the people and it is a privilege to have the chief minister coming to Bau for the celebration,” Nansian, who is Assistant Minister of Community Development, told a press conference here yesterday.

He added that the gathering was also meant to enhance unity, harmony and peace among the plural society in the state.

He said that Taib’s presence at the gathering proved that the BN top leadership was a caring lot.

Nansian, meanwhile, advised the people not to carry flags or banners of any political party or even the BN Club.

“Doing so would mean not respecting the feeling of the Chinese community who are celebrating Chinese New Year. Let’s forget about politics and focus on community development,” he said.
