KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday said the government had implemented three steps to ease the people’s burden, namely price control, subsidy and 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) payout.

He said the BR1M payout was mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak after getting the feedback from the people during his go-to-the-ground programme.

Muhyiddin said the government was also mulling over the possibility to reduce subsidy allocations for certain items and return the money to the people.

“The subsidy for sugar, for example, can probably be reduced a little so that we can return the money to the people, just like BR1M,” he said at the presentation ceremony of BR1M and Chinese New Year celebration for Segambut parliamentary constituency yesterday.

Present were Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon.

Muhyiddin said the go-to-the-ground programmes mounted by him and Najib were aimed at ensuring that the government would make the right decisions in its bid to help the people.

“The prime minister and I went to the ground to meet with leaders of the Malays, Chinese, Indian communities, as well as minority ethnics in Sabah and Sarawak. We did that because we want to hear their stories.

“Many BN leaders have also went to the ground to listen to the people so that we can make the right decision to help them,” he added.
