Telupid Health Clinic razed by fire

TELUPID: The Telupid Health Clinic here was burnt to ground left nothing except its X-ray room.

The wooden building of the clinic measures 165 feet length and 60 feet width which houses Out Patient Department, Emergency Department, Pharmacy, Mother and Child Clinic, laboratory, dental unit, health unit and record unit was razed by fire on Friday night around 10pm.

According to Chief Operation of Sandakan Fire and Rescue, Devi Rashedee Ensoi said they have received a distress call around 10pm.

“The first assistance reached at the place was from Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue on 11.35pm while a team of rescue from Ranau rushed to scene and arrived on 12.02pm.

“The Sandakan Fire and Rescue team reached at the scene on 12.09pm,” he said when met by reporter at the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, yesterday.

He explained that although the building was totally burnt to ground but Fire and Rescue team which have 16 personnel managed to save the X-ray room located several feet behind the building.

“Apart from the X-ray room, we also save a tank of petrol fuel that used for the clinic’s transportation,” he said.

During the incident, a Toyota Hilux owned by the clinic and a Proton Saga owned by a staff nurse were involved in the fire.

No causalities were reported while the cause and total loss are still under investigated.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Beluran, Datuk Ronald Kiandee who visited the scene urges the State Health Department to build a Health Clinic for temporary basis to cater more than 30 thousand residents in Telupid and nearby area.

As for the record, the Telupid Health Clinic started its operation on 1999 and gave medical services to more than 300 patients daily.

The new building of the clinic that is under construction now is expected to complete on this coming August.
