SIBU: Neighbourhood (KRT) Watch members should be mobilised to assist in further developing the nation, especially its existing harmony which is enjoyed by the people.
Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King said the potential of KRT members in playing such a role should be unearthed to benefit all quarters.
“I urge the KRT members to continue upgrading your services,” he said in his text of speech, which was read by his personal assistant Tang Tung King at the installation of new committee members for KRT Bukit Kenyalang here on Saturday evening.
KRT Bukit Kenyalang chairman TR Hillary Chukan Briak headed the new committee at the swearing-in ceremony. Its deputy chairman post is held by Steven Rom and Raphael Ampi is the secretary. Sibu Division Unity Officer Susan Beneth was also present.
According to Tiong, who is also chairman of Sibu Municipal Council, apart from safeguarding security, KRT members could contribute in social development and to improve basic facilities in rural areas.
Meanwhile, Hillary in his welcoming speech said his KRT was registered officially on Feb 10 last year and has a Facebook called KRT Bukit Kenyalang. It has 40 members comprising longhouse folks.
While urging longhouse folks in Sungai Assan area to support the Barisan Nasional candidate in the impending general election, he said his KRT would carry out various activities including educational visits to an
ostrich farm and RTM Sibu this year.
Susan Beneth , who also spoke hoped the KRT would become a machinery of the National Unity and Integration Department to nurture the spirit of unity and harmony among the multi-racial society.
She said those areas which had yet to establish their KRT were most welcomed to set up one in line with the government’s mission to further strengthen unity and interaction among all races.
