KUCHING: Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Datu Sudarsono Osman lamented that the young Sarawak players playing in the President’s Cup and other competitions should step up their game and show more quality when playing for the state.

Following Sarawak’s winless campaign after four matches in the President’s Cup, he felt there is a need to find a solution for the dismal performance.

“I am looking at the whole system. The selected players need to show more quality when playing for the state at tournaments such as the President’s Cup and any other junior competitions that Sarawak competes in,” he said.

He added that anyone who is interested and eligible can represent the state football team, but not everybody has the qualities to become a good player.

For the record, the current Sarawak President’s Cup team are lying near the bottom of the league table as was the case last year.

“I think all of us in the association need to sit down and address this matter as soon as possible.

“I personally do not want Sarawak to continue to become whipping boys in the President’s Cup anymore,” said Sudarsono in an exclusive interview with The Borneo Post yesterday.

Due to his busy work schedule and time constraint, he has yet to attend any of the Sarawak President’s Cup matches so far. He indicated, however, that he might attend the next home match this Tuesday (Feb 25).

He pointed out that there is a need for him attend matches to get a clearer picture of what is happening on and off the field.

At the end of the interview, Sudarsono called on fans to continue their passionate support for the junior team. Sarawak have only registered one point after playing four matches in the tournament so far.

The solitary point resulted from the 0-0 draw against Terengganu last Thursday.
