KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) confirmed yesterday the feasibility study for Phase 1B of the Malaysia-Singapore high-speed train service is nearing completion.

It said the study evaluated the massive project’s viability from technical and financial perspectives.

The study also looked at the project economics, preferred financing structure and assessed the broader socio-economic impact and the project’s potential development paths, SPAD said.

The study also looked at defining an alignment that was technically feasible and could yield optimal revenue, said SPAD, appointed by the government as the lead agency for the high-speed train project, in a statement.

The agency said that it also conducted primary market research to assess the project’s revenue potential in addition to bottom-up costings based on a preliminary design, defining a preferred funding structure and also assessing the high-speed rail project’s impact on other modes of transport.

“It also evaluated the impact on the extent of broader socio-economic benefits,” it said.

To date, SPAD has engaged stakeholders at the federal and state levels, with the private and public sectors.

The feedback received has been refined and tested against international case studies, with inputs from technical experts and modified based on the different local conditions and needs, SPAD said. — Bernama
