SIBU: About 100 vegetable growers in and around Hock Ming Road in Sungei Bidut here were said to have suffered huge damages when their farms were inundated over the past few weeks.

Sibu Vegetable Planters Association chairman Tang Leong Poh said the loss was in the region of RM50,000.

He blamed the blockage of the feeder drains that flowed into the main Sungei Hock Ming for the flood.

He said most of these feeder drains were blocked and after every heavy downpour, the river would overflow and flood the vegetables farms.

Nevertheless, Tang noted that the Sibu Drainage & Irrigation Department (DID) had already carried out drainage clearance in the area.

“However, they lacked precision and they missed the actual area which should have been drained and cleared. As a result, their work was rendered redundant and ineffective,” he lamented.

He urged the DID to consult the residents there the next time they plan to carry out drain clearance.
