KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman is optimistic that SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman (STAR) will one day become an elite school.

He said this was based on the excellent results achieved by the school in both academic and co-curriculum.

According to him, the results in both fields had improved over the past 15 years which was a positive sign towards becoming an elite school.

“After 15 years, we have seen an improvement in result of public examination each year and this is a positive sign towards becoming an elite school, that will become a choice for the people in the city to send their children,” Daud said yesterday at the school’s academic excellence award presentation ceremony.

Daud, who is also Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affair) said the academic result of the school was the poorest about 15 years ago, besides having poor discipline among students.

He said the situation had changed significantly and the students were able to achieve good results like in other schools, adding that the school was now on par with other schools.

In view of this, Daud hoped that the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the school will strengthen their cooperation and chart out activities and educational programmes to attract students.

He explained that the PTA plays an important role in motivating teachers to educate the students.

Meanwhile, Ricky Hambali Jifrion received the ‘Anugerah Tokoh Pelajar’ 2012. Also present were the school principal Rakayah Madon and PTA chairman Mohd Khairulzaim Abdullah.
