KUCHING: Outgoing Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng urged the people to support the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate nominated to stand in Stampin this coming election.

Yong, who served Stampin for three terms, admitted that it is a challenge for any candidate to contest in Stampin as the constituency covers three state assembly seats which were won by the opposition namely Batu Kawa (DAP), Kota Sentosa (DAP) and Batu Lintang (PKR).

It was earlier confirmed by the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president that their youth secretary-general Wilfred Yap will be contesting in Stampin.

“However, it is up to the BN supreme council chairman and prime minister to make the final call,” said Yong during Kampung Cemerlang’s Chinese New Year Open House here on Friday night.

Yong said that Stampin have 84,000 registered voters from a population of more than 230,000 residents. According to him, it is rather hard for an MP to constantly be on the ground to visit and meet the people due to the vastness of the constituency.

“Some quarters might say that I have no time to visit and meet them. The truth is, I always have the Stampin people close to my heart,” said Yong who is also the Deputy Minister of Works.

Meanwhile, Yong handed over RM5,000 to Kampung Cemerlang’s Neighbourhood Watch committee to organise future activities which promotes kinship and unity.

“My last visit here (Kampung Cemerlang) was in 2011 for the Hari Raya open house. A lot has changed such as the 24-hour guard sentry which reflects the unity and cooperation shown by residents here,” said Yong.
