Vital to hold emergency exercise regularly

BINTULU: Emergency management exercise should be carried out by all industry players to minimise the impact of disasters and accidents in the workplace.

State secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani said that players in the oil and gas industry, in particular, should do this regularly to ensure that every employee understand and take the necessary action during an emergency.

He said this when officiating at the soft opening of MLNG Tier 3, National Security Council (MKN) 20, Level 1, Emergency Management Exercise called ‘Eagle 2’ at Petronas LNG Complex at Tanjung Kidurong here yesterday.

“This initiative will at least save lives and minimise the impact of accidents at the workplace which industry players, either small or large scale, cannot compromise on,” he said, whose text of speech was read by his representative Zaidi Morshidi.

He was also confident that this kind of training, which involves the government agencies and private sector, would enable them to identify weaknesses and come up with some improvements.

The exercise, he said, would enable them to gain experience and knowledge in dealing with disasters.

For effective emergency management exercise, he said the responsibility could not be shouldered solely by the National Security Council or the state government.

It required team work and collaboration.

“I believe this exercise will give greater awareness to all parties to ensure the readiness of industry players and local communities should their response and assistance are needed in the event of industrial disasters,” said
Morshidi.

The three-day exercise – from Feb 26 to 28 – involves more than 20 government agencies and private sector
in Bintulu Division including MLNG staff.

Among those present were Bintulu District officer Tuah Suni, deputy police chief DSP Mohd Said Ibrahim and MLNG (Engineering) general manager Jaaztar Aziz.
