Sarawak duo among nine jailed, fined over drugs

KOTA KINABALU: Six locals, two Sarawakians and a Filipino were jailed and fined separately by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possession and consumption of drugs.

In the first case, local Fiona Chong, 25, who appeared before magistrate Edward Paul was fined RM4,500 in default, eight months’ jail for possessing 0.39gram of Ketamine under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

Chong committed the offence at a petrol station in Kobusak, Donggongon at 12.30pm on December 18 last year.

Edward fined Nor Azmi Kerim and Mohd Firdaus RM1,800, in default six and seven months’ jail respectively, for possession of 0.04 grams of syabu.

They were arrested in separate operations in front of two restaurants in Kota Kinabalu area and Sembulan between December 16 last year and January 22 this year.

Edward also fined two Sarawakians, Danny Chai, 38, and Hi Kah Yi, 30, RM2,500, in default six months’ jail for possessing 0.77grams and 0.57grams of Nimetazipam respectively. The duo committed the offence at 12.50am in a bistro pub in Kota Kinabalu.

The court also jailed a Filipino for seven months for possession of 0.03 grams of syabu.

Azman Bin Ismail who pleaded guilty to committing the offence in Likas on January 7 this year was ordered to be referred to the immigration after serving his jail term.

In another case, Edward fined Chin Vui Ting RM2,800, in default seven months’ jail, for possession of 0.25grams of cannabis.

Chin committed the offence in an apartment in Ketiau Putatan at 3pm on January 16.

Another local, Chin Chee Wai, was fined RM8,000, in default one year’s jail for possessing 4.63grams of Ketamine. He committed the offence at the same time and place as Fiona.

Chin was also fined another RM1,500, in default three months’ jail, and put under police supervision for two years for consuming syabu the same day as his first crime at 1pm.

He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act which is liable to a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Junior James was fined RM1,500, in default three months’ jail for consuming syabu.

The accused was arrested at the District Police Headquarters (IPDKK) in Karamunsing on January 21.

Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted the cases.
