KULIM: The government has been urged to set up a commission to investigate claims by the Philippine media and Reuters news agency that Malaysian opposition politicians were behind the intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah by an armed group from Sulu.

Pertubuhan Tolak Individu Bernama Anwar Ibrahim (Tibai) Kedah commissioner,  Khairul Anuar Ramli said in light of the allegations, Kedah Tibai had lodged a report at the Kulim district police headquarters, yesterday evening.

He told reporters  the  alleged involvement had threatened the country’s sovereignty and security, with seven members of the Malaysian security forces killed in the armed attacks by the intruders.

Also present were Badan Bertindak Anti Penyelewengan Negeri Kedah president  Saiful Ambar Abdullah Ambar and over 50 members and supporters.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer had used a Reuters news agency article quoting a Philippine military officer as saying the intruders had come on the “invitation” of a Malaysian opposition politician. The Manila Times  claimed the  incursion was related to the Malaysian opposition’s campaign to give Sabah autonomy if they win.

Khairul Anuar also hit out at PKR vice-president Tian Chua for being “unprofessional, irresponsible and insensitive” by alleging that the armed intrusion in Lahad Datu was a conspiracy by Umno to create fear among voters in the run-up to the 13th general election.

“While the families of the policemen killed are grieving over their loss, he (Tian Chua) has chosen to instidate the people to hate the authorities and if this is allowed to go on, it could threaten national security.

“I urge the relevant authorities to investigate this claim and take action,” he said.

Khairul Anuar also urged Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to stop issuing warnings which had no effect on the armed intruders, but to act fast and sternly to end the crisis.

“We do not wish to see more members of our security forces carrying out operations in Lahad Datu and Semporna getting killed. This is important in assuring the public that the security situation in the country is under control.

“We also urge that other agencies like the Malaysian Armed Forces to intervene to safeguard security in the country,” he said. — Bernama
