HIV-related cases in Malaysia still at worrying stage — Council

KUANTAN: HIV-related cases in the country is still at a worrying stage with 17,000 cases reported so far, according to the Malaysian Aids Council (MAM).

Its president, Datuk Dr Raj Karim, said 90 per cent of the HIV infected cases were men where 26 per cent of them were between the age of 13 and 29, 60 per cent between age 30 and 49 and the remaining 50 and above.

“Based on the latest report, those who indulge in unsafe sex are most likely to be infected with HIV, followed by drug abusers” he told reporters after presenting aid to the Casa Harapan shelter home here yesterday.

Dr Raj said that as of December 2012, 622 people were provided shelter at the 24 shelter homes under MAM.

MAM allocates RM15 million a year for implementation of various activities at shelter homes occupied by Aids patients in the country. — Bernama
