Umno Youth wants early announcement of candidates for polls

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Youth yesterday suggested that the announcement of candidates for the 13th general election (13th GE) be made a week to 10 days before nomination day.

Its leader, Khairy Jamaluddin, said this would give time for Barisan Nasional to ‘treat’ any problems that might cropped up at the divisional level or the party campaign machinery.

“Before, the announcement was made a day or two before nomination, and we did not have time to rectify problems at the division level.

“This time, it is hoped that the announcement can be made earlier and we can treat those who are unhappy (because they are not selected as candidates),” he told reporters.

He was met after representing Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the presentation of the 1Malaysia Book Voucher at the Malaysian National Defence University here.

On the allocation of seats for Umno Youth in the coming general election, Khairy said, the movement would leave the matter to be decided by party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The crucial thing was to ensure that the candidates were winnable candidates and accepted by the people, he added. — Bernama
