KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan has called on Malaysians to participate in the Earth Hour campaign from 8.30pm on March 23.

The chairman of its Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life, Dr Cheah Soon Hai, also proposed that the event be extended to longer hours throughout the entire year to safeguard the health of the planet.

“Although it seems petty by switching off our lights for one hour, through collective effort the amount of energy saved will do a great service in protecting our environment,” he said in a statement yesterday.

A global environmental initiative which started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour is dubbed ‘the world’s largest campaign for the planet’, with more than 7,000 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories participating in the annual programme. — Bernama
